Small Nerve Entrapment Syndromes

These are pain syndromes caused by compression or irritation of various peripheral nerves. The pain is usually well-localized, burning or stabbing, and is sometimes accompanied by numbness or increased skin sensitivity in the area innervated by the affected nerve. Examples include suprascapular nerve (n. suprascapularis), lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (n. cutaneus femoris lateralis, meralgia paresthetica), intermetacarpal nerves, and other mononeuropathies. To confirm the diagnosis, diagnostic nerve blocks, ultrasound examinations, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be performed. Treatment involves injections of local anesthetics and corticosteroids near the nerves or pulsed radiofrequency therapy. In more severe cases, surgical treatment is recommended.
