Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

This is a condition in which, during movement of the shoulder, the structures located beneath the acromion—most commonly the tendons and the bursa—are irritated and compressed. This causes pain, which usually worsens when raising the arm overhead, reaching behind the back, or lying on the affected shoulder. Risk factors include diabetes, thyroid disorders, and prolonged immobility of the shoulder following an injury or surgery. If left untreated, the pain can become chronic, limit shoulder movement, and interfere with daily activities. Treatment includes specialized physical therapy, medication when necessary, and interventional procedures, such as targeted injections, which help reduce pain and inflammation.
