Cervicogenic headache

This is a headache syndrome caused by changes in the structures of the cervical spine – degeneration of the facet joints, damage to the cervical intervertebral discs, or pathologies of the ligaments or muscles. The pain usually starts in the neck or occiput and spreads to one side of the head, sometimes reaching the forehead or the eye area. Often aggravated by prolonged fixed head position or certain neck movements. The syndrome is often misdiagnosed as a migraine or tension-type headache. To confirm the diagnosis, it is necessary to confirm the abnormalities with CT or MRI scans of the cervical spine. Diagnostic blockades are possible to clarify the syndrome. Treatment includes specialised physiotherapy, medication, cervical facet joint nerve blocks, occipital nerve blocks, radiofrequency nerve ablation.
