Carpal tunnel syndrome

This is the most common form of compression neuropathy, where the median nerve is compressed in the carpal tunnel. It is characterised by numbness, tingling and pain in the fingers of the hand, especially at night, and, as it progresses, by weakness of the hand and deterioration of fine motor skills. Repetitive hand movements, pregnancy, diabetes and other conditions increase the risk. In the early stages, treatment includes a wrist splint, medication and injections into the carpal tunnel. The earlier treatment is started, the more nerve function is preserved. In severe or progressive compression, surgical decompression of the nerve may be necessary.
