Pomastektomy Syndrome

This is a chronic pain that occurs after breast removal surgery (mastectomy). It manifests as pain in the chest wall, armpit, inner part of the shoulder, or arm on the side where the surgery was performed. The pain is often neuropathic in nature—burning, stabbing, or tingling—and may be accompanied by increased skin sensitivity or numbness. The cause is damage to the intercostal or other chest wall nerves during surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment of this condition help improve quality of life.
