Neuralgia of the lingual pharyngeal nerve

This is a rare pain syndrome characterized by sudden, intense, shooting pain attacks in the throat, at the base of the tongue, in the ear, or in the area of the angle of the lower jaw. The pain can be triggered by swallowing, chewing, speaking, coughing, or yawning. Attacks typically last from a few seconds to a few minutes. The syndrome’s symptoms resemble those of trigeminal neuralgia, but the location of the pain differs.
