This is back pain caused by damage to an intervertebral disc, most often due to tears or degeneration of the disc. It is one of the most common causes of chronic, so-called “nonspecific” lower back pain. In younger people, it more often presents as episodes of acute pain that resolve completely. As the disc degeneration, the episodes of pain become more frequent or the pain becomes constant.
