Occipital neuralgia

This is pain in the occipital region, caused by irritation or damage to the occipital nerves. The pain is often shooting in nature, spreading from the occiput towards the top of the head, sometimes accompanied by changes in scalp sensitivity. This syndrome can be misdiagnosed as migraine or other headache syndrome. Treatment includes medication for neuropathic pain, occipital nerve blocks with local anaesthetics and corticosteroids, and pulsed radiofrequency therapy.
