Intercostal neuralgia

This is pain in the chest wall caused by damage or irritation to the intercostal nerves, spreading along the ribs. It may occur after thoracic surgery, rib fractures, shingles or for no apparent reason. The pain is often burning, stabbing or searing, intensifying with deep breathing, coughing or movement. Treatment includes medical therapy for neuropathic pain, intercostal nerve blocks, pulsed radiofrequency therapy and cryodenervation.
