Diabetic polyneuropathy

This is nerve damage caused by prolonged elevated blood sugar levels. It is most often seen in the feet and lower legs, with burning pain, numbness, tingling or hypersensitivity. It is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus. In addition to good glycaemic control, timely treatment of neuropathic pain is important. Specific medications for neuropathic pain (anticonvulsants, antidepressants), topical agents (lidocaine), intravenous infusion of lidocaine in severe cases and radiofrequency therapy are used.
