Migraine

This is a primary headache syndrome, characterised by recurrent episodes of moderate to severe pain of a throbbing nature. Attacks are often accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and a need for quiet. Some patients have a pre-seizure aura – a visual, sensory or speech disturbance lasting up to an hour. Uncontrolled migraines can significantly disrupt daily activities and impair quality of life. Treatment includes seizure treatment (triptans, NSAIDs), prophylactic treatment to reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks, and interventional treatment – occipital nerve blocks, trigger point injections, botulinum toxin injections.
